Course Description

The first 10 pages of your book are crucial. Agents often ask for your first 10 pages pasted into your query letter. Workshopping your writing, sharing it with others and getting feedback is also critical in developing your work. In this four-week workshop course, we’ll read and critique revisions of your first 10 pages in a supportive and constructive atmosphere. The first week you’ll familiarize us with the premise of your book (a written synopsis would be helpful, but not required), then we’ll workshop your pages, giving positive feedback and constructive ideas for the next week’s revision, driven by LIT's philosophy in the writer’s room — every book can work, and we're all more successful when we're positive, supportive, and constructive. Requires sending your pages to the instructor and other workshop members at least *three* days prior to class weeks two and three, revision of your pages prior to weeks two and three, and outside reading of the other workshop members’ pages prior to classes (30 pages each for weeks two and three). On week four, we’ll discuss revision moving forward, i.e., how to make the rest of your book as good as your first 10 pages! Open to both fiction and non-fiction writers. Taught by author Chrysler Szarlan. PREREQUISITES: The first 10 pages of a book you are getting ready to send out to agents or editors. Classes are two hours long each week for four weeks (except for holidays). Students may miss one class throughout the course. All sales final. No refunds.

All sales are final. No refunds. A LIT instructor may dismiss a students from the course without the right to a refund if they violate LIT’s policies for privacy, inclusion and anti-harassment. No make-up sessions will be provided if a student misses class. Classes may be recorded to assist students who miss class. Recordings are not guaranteed. If a recording of a class is shared with the students of this course, it may not be shared with anyone outside of this course. If a student consents to LIT taking photos or recordings of them for promotional purposes, those files are owned by LIT and shall be used for those purposes. LIT’s services are for educational and training purposes.
